Superstar cities: Unlocking the untapped potential of Africa’s urban centres Join us on 29 October at 1200-1300 BST / 1400-1500 EAT to discuss what makes a superstar city? 29 octubre 2021 |
The past 18 months saw the first pan-African recession in 50 years. Yet the outlook for the continent is one of optimism, with the African Development Bank forecasting a swift and sustained recovery. Though some cities make strikingly outsized economic contributions, African cities are often overlooked en bloc. Drawing on the findings of our recent Superstar Cities of Africa report, we ask: what makes a superstar city and how can Africa’s urban centres realise their undoubted promise? Scholarships are on offer to South Africans and other African nationals for the Wits-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab PhD programme in urban studies. Applications are being accepted until 31 August 2021. The Wits-TUB-UNILAG Urban Lab programme supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) seeks to improve graduate education in urban fields across Sub-Saharan Africa. It is one of seven SDG Graduate Schools funded by the DAAD worldwide. The lead partners, the Habitat Unit at Technische Universität Berlin and the School of Architecture and Planning at Wits University in Johannesburg and the University of Lagos, collaborate in the offering of an urban-oriented graduate training and capacity building programme at Wits University that seeks to effectively address the challenges and needs of modern urban studies. Successful PhD candidates will be based in the School of Architecture and Planning at Wits University. The school has a structured PhD offering. This will include regular support and networking activities for enrolled PhD students in the school. Applications are being accepted by the school until 31 August 2021. Applicants with non-South Africa university qualification must keep the pre-screening deadline of 31 May 2021 in mind.
