International conference on “Boosting East Africa Trade by Improving Transport” (BEAT IT) at Crown Plaza Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya on 25 th and 26 th September 2019.

The conference was organized by Cardno IT Transport, an international transport and urban development
organization. Prof Mwangi presented a paper titled “Value Chain Approach to Skills Audit for Planning in Urbanization Sector, Rwanda” which he has co-authored with Dr. S. K. Muketha, a lecturer at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning, University of Nairobi. Prof Michael Eugene Porter of Business School at Harvard University in the USA developed Value Chain Model in mid-1985 for application in business firms. In 2017 Prof Mwangi applied the model in a skills audit in urbanization sector study in Rwanda.

Prof. Mwangi and Dr Muketha have since collaborated in an ongoing research to derive wider application
of Value Chain Model in the discipline and profession of planning. Plan Tom Odongo, a former CEC for Environment in the Nairobi City County participated in plenary panel session where conference participants asked questions and points of clarifications as well as made comments on the subjected addressed in the presentation.
