Impacts of low income residential area on a lake. A case study of Langa Langa and Lake Nakuru

Informal settlements are increasingly becoming a big problem in many developing cities of the
world and Nairobi is no exception. This study looks at the nature and challenges of
infrastructure and service provision in Kijiji settlement located in the Langata area in the city of
Nairobi. It also aims at looking into possible solutions and management systems that can
mitigate these challenges of infrastructure and service provision. The Kijiji informal settlement is
situated at the centre of middle income residential area and yet, even as the informal settlement
was growing these residents , who hopefully should have known that development of the
informal settlement would bring down the value of their property and probably pose security
challenges, did nothing to stop the settlement growing. The major objectives of the study are to
establish how Kijiji settlement came up in the midst of middle income residential
neighbourhoods, to determine the level of infrastructure and service provision, to investigate
provisions in the central and local authorities’ laws and policies that the residents could have
used to stop the development of such a settlement and to come up with recommendations that
will improve the existing situation in the infrastructure and service provision. The low levels of
infrastructure and service provision in informal settlements presents a scenario that demands
for lasting solutions and thus the approach of this research. This is due to the nature and scale
of impacts that are realized by the residents of the study area.
The approach used in this research was mainly by the methodology. First was the review of the
various literature materials related to the provision of infrastructure and services. Site visits
whereby photos were taken, questionnaires administered and observation done were carried
out which was then followed by the sampling of part of the population in the study area which
acted as a representative sample of the population. Data analysis was also done so as to
synthesize the information so far collected. Lastly was the presentation of the data through
mapping and photos as well as charts and graphs.
The study established that Kijiji village lacks adequate infrastructure and services and that the
village is built on privately owned land and that at the moment, there is an ongoing tussle
between the land owners and the residents. 93% of the interviewees lack direct access to water
and rely on vendors, 100% lack legal and safe electricity connection and 70% are tenants with
the rest being structure owners.79% of those interviewed say that the there are no existing
roads, 14% say that they are inadequate and 7% say that the roads are in a very poor condition.
The settlement has no sewer line connections, no drainage services and no solid waste
disposal systems. This study recommends that the existing infrastructure and services in the
area be improved in order they can be able to support the population of the area and its
