AN INVESTIGATION INTO PROBLEMS FACING PROVISION OF HOUSING AND INFRASTRUCTURE SERVICES IN INFORMAL SETTLEMENT.

Case study of Mariguini informal settlement in Nairobi, kenya.

ABSTRACT

Urbanization in the world has left much to be desired as slum dwellers are trapped in poverty, insecurity, deplorable housing conditions, inadequate provision of water, electrification and sanitation, poor health and education and low productivity. These conditions are as a result of the failure in existing urban, social and economic development policies. Governments are therefore challenged in addressing the issue of slum development and their further expansion. The growing incidence of slums has thus, resulted in new policies, programs and strategies by city authorities to improve the living conditions of slum dwellers.

The study focused on the best way Mariguini can be served with good habitable houses, water, sanitation and good walk paths installed with street light to reduce insecurity level in the settlement. A sample of respondent was chosen randomly from the population to represent the views of the residents. Several interview schedules were also conducted in different organizations such as national housing corporation, Nairobi Water and sewerage Company, Nairobi City Council and KENSUP. The study used both primary and secondary data collection method, which entailed descriptive and qualitative techniques. The data collected was analyzed using methods like tables, graphs, pie charts, maps and photographs.

The state in Mariguini slum as was evident from the field study is not virtuous. The residents are poorly housed with temporal type of houses, which are poorly constructed with no plans hence breeding chaos of disorganization; secondly, sanitation is poor as well as water provision in the settlement is not enough. Solid waste collection is not provided for by the CNN hence dumping is done along road reserve and in the river. Land tenure in the settlement is a problem making it difficult to provide most of the services.

All this condition must be solved so as, those slums are not left behind in the growth of the city and for us to realize millennium development goal of 2015.
