AN ASSESSMENT OF THE PROVISION OF FACILITIES AND SERVICES IN A TERMINAL FACILITY. A CASE OF MACHAKOS COUNTRY BUS TERMINAL

ABSTRACT

Transport terminals are at the very center of critical issues in economic, political, urban, and other geographic subfields, and deserve much more attention. Having in mind that all transport activities begins from a terminus and ends in a terminus, an effective, efficient and reliable transport system is a mainspring for rapid and sustained development in terms of national, regional and international integration, trade facilitation, poverty reduction and improvement of welfare of the citizenry. The sector is crucial in the promotion of socio-economic activities and development.(Jean - Paul Rodrigue 1997)

The government of Kenya has been creating regulations for managing bus termini especially by - laws within the traffic act. This has helped reorganize bus stops and termini within the Country but there is still lack of an act that specifies the required facilities and ratio of utilization. The research therefore mainly focuses on identifying the challenges facing provision of facilities and services within Machakos bus terminus in Nairobi by looking into the facilities that are currently and should be provided within Machakos bus terminus.

The objectives towards this research included, to find out the planned range of facilities and services in the bus terminus; to establish the operational and functional constraints faced in the utilization of the country bus terminus and lastly to recommend appropriate planning policy measures to be put in place for providing an inclusive country bus terminus. Data for this research was collected and collated from primary and secondary sources, primary being the passengers, station super visor, stewards, vendors and the key informants and they gave their views in relation to the objectives of the research.

Summary of findings deduced from the research were as follows; negligence by authorities to discharge their services accordingly; in adequate garbage collection facilities; poor lighting system within the terminus; inadequate land area was a cause of a challenge too and finally insufficient funds. Major challenges that are found to affect the provision of facilities are congestion, low hygiene standards, inaccessibility, exclusive use of the terminus, in security and poor lighting system among others. Various recommendations have been advanced in view to provide short term remedy to the challenges provided and also long term strategies that seek to streamline the operation of the country bus terminus.
