Implication of unplanned bus terminus on land use (Kasarani – Mwiki Road)

This study set out to investigate and analyze the factors that contribute to traffic congestion on the Kasarani-Mwiki road and their consequences, with the view to propose appropriate intervention measures to this problem. The study broadly examined the contribution of the informal Mwiki bus terminus and market to traffic congestion along the Kasarani-Mwiki road, the organization of land use activities within the Mwiki area and their implications for planning interventions to improve traffic flow in the whole area.
The major findings of the study were that the causes of traffic congestion on Kasarani-Mwiki road and within the informal Mwiki bus terminus area included: too many low capacity vehicles, poor management by traffic police, vehicles making turn at the median of the road, indiscipline vehicle operators, inadequate road space, lack of designated bus terminus and market, no parking area for vehicles and no designated pathways for pedestrians and NMT modes of transport among others. The effects of the traffic congestion included; a lot of time spent on the road during travel, poor road condition, high levels of pollution and consumption of fuel, high risks of accidents, ease of crossing the road by the pedestrians and maneuvering by the hawkers, reduced financial returns for the vehicle operators and business persons and high transportation costs among others
The major recommendations from this study included; efficiently designing road networks with adequate provision of NMT facilities and terminal facilities, efficiently instituting traffic management authorities and tools, having efficient institutions that can manage the market areas and the transportation networks, efficient provision of designated bus terminus and market areas.
